Before there was a Lakewood Village

Do you have any information or materials to share about this period of Lakewood Village’s history? Here’s how to help with this history project.

Like most of the Santa Clara Valley, the area now occupied by Lakewood Village used to be agricultural. The City of Sunnyvale was concentrated in what is presently the downtown area (see the projection from 1906, below), and the Lakewood Village area was not yet part of Sunnyvale.

Just after World War II, ten investors bought 250 acres in what is now the “Fairwood side” of Lakewood Village and built the Santa Clara Valley Airport (see the photo gallery, below). The land was graded for a runway, had a mechanic’s shop and a small office, and was used by amateur aviators until the land was sold for development in 1955.
