Importing to Address Book
The PalmAddress application in PalmConnect has the facility to
import .csv data extracts from other applications. Please consult
your PalmConnect User's Guide before attempting to import files
to PalmAddress. The following are some clarifications and considerations.
- You must be sure of the order of fields in the file to be
imported. Open the file in a text editor and visually account
for all of the fields and note the order. You WILL need this
for mapping later. Many database, contact manager, etc. applications
do not export fields in the order they appear on the screen.
- Make sure that the file is truly of the comma-separated-value
type. In the text editor, note that there are "quotation" marks
around each field AND that there is a comma between fields and
a < CR > between records.
- The file should have the extension .CSV. Rename if necessary.
- In the File Import dialog box:
- Always choose comma-separated-value for Format. "No Idea"
does not detect file type correctly and will not cause the Map
Import Fields button to appear.
- Choose the filename, then click the Map Import Fields button.
Don't click the Import button yet!
- You should see as many fields in the Source List as you know
there are in the source file. If not, there is a problem with
the file itself. Recheck to see that it is truly comma-separated
format (per above).
- Map the fields in the Source List to the fields in the Destination
List according to the list you made when examining the file in
the text editor. Make sure you click the Map button for each
pair selected, and verify the mapping in the Map List.
- When the mapping is finished and verified, then you can press
the Import button. There have been very large files imported
with success (e.g. in excess of 1100 records, and pages of 150
lines). See the Application Limits TechNote for maximum import limits.
Note: Always make a back-up copy of your Address Book before
importing a file into it. Also, always backup your Zoomer data
files using PalmConnect before overwriting them by linking files
from your PC.
Caution: You can create very large files for the applications
in PalmConnect. Be sure that you have sufficient memory available
on your Zoomer before you link these large files over. You may
decide you need subsets of your data or need to get a PCMCIA memory
card to accommodate all the data you need.
