I doubt you can. Remember, @dirname.000 is a hack to allow long directory
names and symbolic links on top of a file system that doesn't support them.
If GEOS let you muck with it, you could screw up other runnning apps, and if
you editted it wrong, you would screw up GEOS when it tried to access the
directory.
