How much spare mem needed

Ok after much effort and research (not to mention almost all of my 30 day
return window) I got all of my 2,500 db records in to the OG.

Now along the way at points I got a warning that I did not have enough
spare space and that new data may be lost if some older data is not
cleared. This despite I have 80kb free in the unit. This occurred while I
was trying to edit the field names of a DB after I loaded some data in. I
suspect the OG wants a lot of spare room just in case when you do this and
could not come up with it. I late delete a whole DB and then made the
change and reloaded the other DB.

But the question remains how full do we dare load a OG. How much memory is
needed for "scratch space".
