network card modems

Has anyone played with "network card modems"? I grabbed a Megahertz 14.4
network card/modem PCMCIA, from a laptop at work, and tried it in my ogo
today. When I first plugged it in, it locked up the ogo (had the ogo
turned off, plugged the card in, and turned the ogo on....locked).
After pulling the main batteries (good-bye data...glad I backed-up
yesterday), and trying the same sequence stated above, the card worked???

I then proceeded to connect with a local provider who uses linux.
Connection when smooth! After maybe 5 minutes I disconnected to play
with some software settings and I noticed my batteries were down to one bar!

Needless to say... won't be using the ogo much more today!

Do the network card/modem cards draw a lot more power than a standard
modem card? Also, I noticed that the PCMCIA card was already warm after
5 or 6 minutes of use. Are PCMCIA cards rated differently....some draw
more amps than others? I really don't want to "fry" my ogo playing
around with a PCMCIA card that draws more amps than my ogo can handle!
