Reagarding the HP-Omnigo recall, Yes there was a recall.

Check the following >> http://hpcc998.external.hp.com/pressrel/08nov95b.html

To paraphrase: OGOs pre Ser No.SG54402000 would not use the backup battery
to maintain memory when the main batteries were removed.

Now, FYI, besides that here is another way to loose data...

In the first week alone I used up 4 pairs of AA alkalines. They died just
as I power-on the unit and they couldn't sustain the sudden current drain as
alkalines have a controlled discharge. This causes the alkalines to be
electrochemically damaged internally and they cannot provide a sufficient
current any more to fully power the OGO, in my case all the data data was
lost and a Hard-reset was the only way to get the OGO working again. Since
then I have researched the AA options and have gained some confidence with
some new 750mAH NiCd, but having said that I have not put in any new data
until even the NiCds prove themselves.

Leaving the 'Touch screen on' enabled draws a current from the batteries to
power just the pressure sensing part of the screen, usually this was
responsible for my data losses with alkalines.

When I was confronted with the problem at first I could never figure out why
the batteries died more quickly the less I used the OGO!
