I have a friend who has a gray spot in the middle of his screen, tech
support told him is was from pressing his thumb there to turn it on
and there was nothing that could be done about it short of buying a
new one.

my 2 cents...

I've had at least two drops onto tarmac/concrete; at least one other
onto carpeted crete (institutional flooring at a hotel).

Sone superficial scratches, but no serious damage in evidence.

OTOH, I *am* noticing a region of the display that's slightly grayer
than the rest of the screen whenever the unit is on.

I think that's just a display defect, but I can't be sure...
