modems

Hi,

A couple people asked me how I got the PCMCIA modem to work.

I used OgComm, set to COMM 4.

I have to shift-on-next reboot with the modem NOT in. When it powers
up, make sure the card eject button is dim (i.e. it doesn't think there
is a card present), then I insert the card.

After I dial and get the unix prompt, I enter "stty rows 14" which sets
the terminal height to 14 rows. (You can also set the columns but I've
found it's not necessary and actually causes some problems)

The only things I've done with it so far is the simple 'mail' program,
which does line by line mail reading and sending. I created a file
called .mailrc with one line "set crt". This forces the program to obey
the stty set row setting so it stops scrolling after 14 lines.

The backspace key is not mapped, so when I hit it, I get a dot, although
it did actually delete the previous character, I just can't see it correctly.

I've tried to rn Lynx for WWW browsing, and it's full of control
characters that muck everything up. (Although when I run in my normal PC
terminal program and 'stty rows 14 cols 30' Lynx runs just fine in a
little tiny screen.)

Any Unix gurus out there know how to change the terminal type? I'm
guessing my account is assuming VT100, which OgComm isn't doing. I'm
still looking for a way to tell my account that it's NOT VT100, so it
will hopefully suppress the control characters.

If I can get it to work, I'll have email and www on the OGO, and I'll be
very tempted to go out and get a cell phone, just so I can do it from
anywhere!

I'll keep you posted, and please help me if you have any clues.
