If memory serves me correctly, the state files simply preserve where you
are in an application. Thus if you close the application and then bring
it up again, you return to the spot where you left it.

I'm not sure why your state files did not disappear when you removed the
batteries (I assumed you removed both the main and back-up battery and you
don't have a SRAM card), but a Fn-F3 is supposed to clear the state files.
Also a system reset as outlined on page 2-21 of your manual should also
clear all the state files.
