Hmmmm, an Amiga user, huh? I've got an old 2000, but now am Windows
dependant. Supposedly that PCMCIA slot was a standard one. It should
work with a PC.

This is a great description. Thanks :-)

Can the owner of the Omnigo FAQ add this to the FAQ?

Well, here is how I have done it:
Before doing any of this BACKUP YOUR OGO! This works for me but
who knows if it will work correctly for you.

Method 1:
There are two drivers for gaining access to a DOS prompt,
OGTMODE and OGTEXT. They are both available at:
http://www.gis.net/~mmansour/omnigo/omnigo.html

I will describe the following using OGTEXT.COM but you can use
either of them. I also strongly advice you to read the
instructions which come with these drivers.

1) Copy one of the above drivers to the root directory of your
OGO RAM drive b:\
2) Using an editor (e.g. OGEDIT) edit the b:\autoexec.bat
and change the last line
GEOS
to the following two lines
B:\OGTEXT.COM
REM GEOS

3) Reboot (ON + SHIFT + NEXT)
After rebooting you should arrive at the DOS prompt. Some
of the punctutaion keys will not function properly here.
This is to make sure you can get at the dos prompt.
4) To start GEOS, just type GEOS at the prompt and you will
be back at the usual OGO Home Screem.
5) To correct the key assignment problem, you will need
Ansi.sys from DOS Copy this to the root directory of
your RAM drive b:\
(FROM The Usenet comp.sys.palmtops HP100/200LX FAQ -
Caution: copying parts of DOS is probably illegal and/or
a violation of your license agreement..).
6) Using an editor, add the following line to the b:\config.sys
file DEVICE=B:\ANSI.SYS

7) For the key reassignment, I have appended two
examples to the bottom of this post in a file
(KEYS1.BAT) to reassign : and ; to the correct
locations on the OGO keyboard. Feel free to edit/expand it.
You can copy and paste it into your autoexec.bat so the key
assignments are done automatically anytime you reboot.

With this method though, to get to the DOS prompt from the
Home Screen, you have to reboot the OGO to get back to the
DOS prompt.

Method 2:
This is a continuation of Method 1 but allows you to get to DOS
directly from the OGO Home Screen without needing to reboot.
It is basically what was posted here by the author of OGTEXT,
Jan Sedlak, with some additions by me.

You will need to get the following files from GeoPublish.
GeoPublish can be obtained from number of sites including:
ftp://ftp.mcs.com/mcsnet.users/jbarr/GeoPublish
The files needed from GeoPublish are:
\privdata\launcher.geo
\system\spool.geo
\system\shell.geo
\system\sysappl\manager.geo

I) Copy OGO command.com from A:\ on B:\
Change following line in CONFIG.SYS
old: Shell = a:\command.com /P
new: Shell = b:\command.com /P

II) copy the files from GeoPublish into the following directories
on the OGO
launcher.geo b:\geoworks\privdata
spool.geo b:\geoworks\system
shell.geo b:\geoworks\system
manager.geo b:\geoworks\world

III) RUN GEOS
* new icon (GEO MANAGER) should appear
* launch it
* select menu:

Utilities/Create Launcher

* an OGO file selector will appear
- click onto the blank line to get to the b:\ where
COMMAND.COM is placed
- double click on the COMMAND.COM

* another window will appear, too big to fit onto OGO screen
- press ENTER to continue (nothing to setup here)

* you will return to GEOMANAGER
- press "DOS" panel and you will see an icon with GEOS logo
and COMMAND label

DOUBLE CLICK THE ICON TO LAUNCH DOS FROM GEOS!

IV) Also from DOS having the MODE.COM command is very useful.
Copy MODE.COM from DOS to your B:\

V) For easier access to DOS on the OGOG, copy the Command icon from
GEOWORKS\DOSROOM to your WORLD directory and this will give you
an icon for "command" on the OGO Home Screen.

VI) To go to DOS first hit the following key combination to reverse
the screen display from Black on white to white on black:
"ON+/". You will see why in a second :-)

VII) Double Click on the Command icon on the Home Screen
assuming you did step
V) above. (or go to Geomanager, select DOS, then command)

VIII) DOS will start with the screen showing in black on white.

IX) At this stage, the screen mode is in 40columns by 25 rows
instead of the usual 80x25. This is where the Mode command
comes in handy. I wrote a batch file MODE80.BAT to change this.
It has only one line:
B:\MODE COLS=80

Running this puts you in the more useful 80x25 screen mode.
After finishing with DOS, type exit, then enter to get you
back to the OGO Home Screen

That's all :-)

NOTE 1: I ocassionally get errors when going to DOS using
Method 2 but they haven't been consistent enough for me
to pinpoint the problem.

NOTE 2: The OG screen though CGA compatible, doesn't have
a full CGA (640x200) screen so you will see less than half
the width of most text and CGA DOS programs.

Sorry about the length of this post but I figured a detailed
explanation might save some bandwidth in the future by
reducing duplicate questions on this subject.

Hope this helps!
