DISCLAIMER: I think this will work. I don't think this will hose your
OmniGo. However, even though I'm pretty sure it will work and not hose your
OmniGo, I could be wrong. So, make sure you backup everything important and
don't blame me if your OmniGo gets hosed. Suffice to say you shouldn't try
this if you are a novice computer user, don't like tinkering with
configuration files, or have irreplacable data on your OmniGo. Also, it's
generally a Bad Thing to edit your GEOS.INI file, even though it's usually
productive and sometimes even fun. So, to sum up, make sure anything
important on your OmniGo is backed up, and don't blame me if your OmniGo
gets hosed. Especially make a backup copy of your GEOS.INI file before you
start.

OK, now that the boring stuff is over, let's wreak some havoc. If anybody
tries this and it works, please let me know. I did this, but I have also
made other changes to run GEOS desktop applications on my OmniGo, so I
don't have much of a baseline. At the very least, this process requires
either some file transfer program (like OmniCom) and a working connection
to a desktop. Other things like a GEOS file manager, text editor, and being
able to run in Text Mode are optional but makes the process easier.

1) COMBINE THE INI FILES
In the OmniGo's default configuration, the OmniGo looks at two
configuration files when GEOS
starts up. One is on the B drive (writeable) and one is on the A drive
(read only). By whatever
means you find convenient, you need to combine these two files and
place them on your B
drive. I suggest you copy A:\GEOWORKS\NET.INI and B:\GEOWORKS\GEOS.INI
to your
desktop to make things a little easier. Since GEOS.INI is being used by
the system, you need
copy it, and then copy the copy to your desktop. Copy GEOS.INI to
OLDGEOS.INI. This is
your backup copy in case something goes wrong. Rename GEOS.INI to
DELETEME.INI and
rename NET.INI to GEOS.INI. Both DELETEME and GEOS ini files are plain
text files, and are
made up of several sections. At the top of each section is the section
name in brackets. Your
job, if you choose to accept it, is to copy all the lines in
DELETEME.INI to thier corresponding
sections in GEOS.INI. If a line already exists in GEOS.INI, clobber it
with the line in
DELETEME.INI. If there is no corresponding section in GEOS.INI, you
need to create one and
move the lines over.

2) TWEAK GEOS.INI
OK, now we get to the tricky bit. Remove the line "top = SYS:\" int the
paths section. Now in
the paths section, add the lines "system = SYS:\SYSTEM", "userdata =
SYS:\USERDATA",
and "document = SYS:\DOCUMENT".

3) COPY THE WORLD
Now you need to copy everything in SYS:\WORLD to B:\GEOWORKS\WORLD.
Well,
maybe not EVERYTHING. :-) The whole point of this little exercise is to
let you play with
your WORLD directory. One thing to remember is that programs which have
thier own buttons
beside the screen must remain in the top WORLD directory. You might be
able to change this
by editing the hardIconBar section of your GEOS.INI file, but I haven't
tried it. For instance,
"app7 = Spread sheet" would change to "app7 = apps\Spread sheet" if you
moved the
spreadsheet applications to a directory "b:\geoworks\world\apps". I'd
like to know if this
works, too. I simply haven't bothered to try it yet.

4) SWAP GEOS.INI FILES
OK, now all you have to do is replace the OmniGo's B:\GEOWORKS\GEOS.INI
file with
your new and improved version. You can't do this while GEOS is running,
so you have two
options. Figure out how to enable the Text Mode on your OmniGo, or dink
with your
B:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file to swap them before GEOS loads.

Enjoy, good luck, and please keep me posted if you try this.
