I just got the connectivity pack, so I just beginning to experiment with the serial port. It is true that there are no 'native' communications apps. I'm not sure about all modems, but I can tell you that I had a standard PCMCIA (not a 50ma) in the slot and it didn't power down the OG as it had my Zoomer.
