I'm not familiar with the specific package you bought, but cables for the
Zoomer are available by themselves, so it might be appropriate that you
didn't get any software with the cable.

I don't know why AOL won't connect, I haven't tried it recently from my
Zoomer, but there have been times in the past when connection from a Zoomer
didn't work for a few days until AOL corrected things at their end.

The fact that your modem dials at all, however, means that the cable you
bought is probably a standard serial cable. A standard serial cable is the
right thing for connecting your modem. But it's not enough for connecting
your Zoomer to a computer, nor for printing. For those tasks you need a "null
modem" cable.

But don't despair. The cable you have is fine. What you need now is to buy a
null modem adapter to hook on in line with your cable. You can find them at
most electronic stores, like Radio Shack, for example, or at most computer
stores. A "null modem adapter" is what you want. They usually cost less than
$10. They are usually 25 pin, so depending on the ports on your computer, you
might also need a 9 to 25 pin converter, only a few dollars, and/or some
"gender benders" if the male/female pinouts of the cable or the null modem
adapter are not appropriate for your ports.
