The card latch is definitely a switch, and I'd assume it needs to be
closed for the PC Card to be in action. As far as replacement goes (other
than sending it off to the manufacturer) there are whopping great pads
for the metal slider to close on. (You could probably solder it closed or
add your own little dip switch).
Maybe contact one of those unfortunate souls who have smashed their
displays to get a replacement part.
(As an aside, I was quite fascinated by the eject mechanism in the Zoomer
when my friend took his apart. It was nifty. But it takes up a fair bit
of room too.)
