You said you wanted a modem to take out of town, on occasion.
I use my PC's external faxmodem, an INTEL 400e SATISFAXTION. Yes, 14.4K baud is overkill, but IF YOU CAN FIND A PHONELINE, ELECTRICITY HAS PRECEEDED IT, so why bother getting a second so-called "portable" modem!
Nobody uses my modem when I'm gone, anyway. If your standard PC modem is internal, maybe you could sell it to offset price of a total function, external modem.
