Most electronic devices including PDA's and laptops were okay while in the air when the seat belt sign was off. When the seat belt sign was on, and you were climbing or descending, the electronic stuff was to be turned off. The flight magazine has details.
As far as going thru security, they always want you to turn on a computer any way. So I have them hand inspect and I boot it up for them.
