Great. I've been waiting for this for a long long time. My suggestion
will be: Make the interface as close (if not identical) to FTP as possible.
Use the FTP response code if possible. (e.g. 220 Zoomer ready.) Anything
fancy (mget, mput, etc) can be handled by another layer on top of it. (such
as ange-ftp.) There is an FTP based packing for mirroring. Therefore,
automatic backup/restore feature isn't really necessary.

Linux is mostly SysV and POSIX and has decent BSD emulation. Your SVR4
code might work as is.

Personally, I prefer tar.gz distribution. (Because I can use emacs
tar-mode to read it.)
