I've been using the Renewal cells by Rayovac. They're 1.5 volt instead of 1.3 (NiCd) and have worked quite well. I have two sets
and just swap them out whenever I think about it (Rayovac recommends re-charging batteries after ~1-2 hours of use rather than
completely discharging the batteries, since it supposedly damages the batteries).
