I had the same problem with a Zoomer I bought last fall. No matter what
I did it wouldn't go past the calibration routine. I ended up having to
send it in to Radio Shack for repairs. Luckily it was still under
warranty, and since I'd purchased 2 at once I didn't have to go without.
By the way, don't leave your PDA in your luggage. My first one got
crushed somewhere between Frankfurt and Heathrow, and I had to wait till
my next vacation in the States to get a new one.
