I think it's important to distinguish here between the Expert-mode that
you getwith uiMode=3, and Chris D's expert-plus mode. The former gives
you a desktop where you can see running apps, where the latter also
speeds things up, uses smaller fonts and narrower borders, includes
better ramcard drivers, runs more than 3 apps at once, fixes the double-
click speed, etc. etc.
I've gotten a lot more use from the marvellous device since installing
expert-plus-mode (and graffiti) and I like a desktop. I haven't tried
tweaking the uiMode back again while keeping the other expert-plus
stuff - I'm not certain why you would want to.
