the future of zoomer-list and the Zoomer WWW site

With the introduction of the HP OmniGo 100, it's clear that there are more
GEOS-based PDAs available than can reasonably be called "Zoomers". I think that
the Zoomer audience has shown an interest in information about these products,
if not the products themselves, and I'd like to continue to provide a non-vendor
information source and a non-AOL/C$/Prodigy forum for discussion.

My choices boiled down to two alternatives:

(1) start a new WWW site and a new mailing list about the OmniGo, or

(2) expand the scope of the existing site and mailing list to accomodate
non-Zoomer products

Alternative (1) requires more work from me -- and cost, since my ISP won't let
me have another mailing list without charging me for it -- but more importantly,
I think it would tend to fracture the GEOS PDA community. This would get even
worse if, say, Hyundai or Casio came out with another GEOS-based PDA product.

Alternative (2) runs the risk of annoying die-hard Zoomeroids with a lot of hype
about OmniGos, and similarly, annoying die-hard OmniGoners with a lot of
nostalgia about Zoomers.

I think I've made the best choice by opting for (2). What you'll see in the
future is this:

- The Zoomer WWW site will get reorganized (and redecorated!) under a new
banner, "the GEOS PDA WWW site". I'll do my best to separate Zoomer and
OmniGo (and GEOS 2.0 and GEOS 2.1) information where appropriate, but
keep things common where that's appropriate. Don't hold your breath --
these things take time.

- The zoomer-list mailing list will become the geos-pda mailing list. If all
goes as planned, you won't need to resubscribe or anything. One fine morning,
you'll simply start getting mail from geos-pda instead of zoomer-list. The
old posting and administrative addresses will be aliased to the new posting
and administrative addresses for a while, and I'll provide new instructions
to go along with the new list.

I'll also do a bit of promotion of the new site and list, so we'll probably see
more subscribers and more information coming in.

If you have questions, concerns, suggestions, or offers to help :-), please feel
free to send them to me at brian@grot.com.

Zoom on,
Brian
