In a word, yes.
Doug's description explains a lot of why most fax/modems come with bundled software that supports only that one device.
There are some companies, like Delrina, that have created fax software to support a variety of fax/modems. Those companies specialize in that kind of software and still they don't support every brand and type of fax/modem. Even OS/2 Warp, which has all the resources of IBM behind it, doesn't support every fax/modem out there, though it comes about as close as any software.
I own three different fax softwares and they are each around two mb in size.
Will there (soon or ever) be fax support for GEOS on the Zoomer? I don't know the answer to that question. What I do know is that Geoworks is working on fax support for the GEOS operating system. Class 2 support is well under way, and Class 1 support has quite a lot of work yet to go, and that still doesn't take care of at least two other significant standards in the marketplace.
And the Zoomer doesn't currently contain any applications that support faxing, either, so there are yet more obstacles to the project than just the creation of fax drivers for the system.
Another consideration here is how robust the fax support would be. I'm not personally familiar with Sharp Wizards, but I assume that they are limited to text output, not graphics. GEOS is inherently a graphical system, so text-only support would bypass a significant part of what GEOS is about. Text-only fax support is already available via the fax feature of AOL's email, perhaps not the most elegant solution, but one that does come preloaded on the device.
And finally, there's the question of whether the product would be profitable to create and market. I don't know the answer to that, but rest assured that the folks who make decisions about what software Geoworks will work on do know.
