Your problem had nothing to do with file names.
OgEdit is equiped with AI routines that detect boring articles.
Once such a paper is discovered, the document is automatically
wiped out and potential readers are spared. :)

Seriously, I'm so sorry you lost your work. Normally I only
fix bugs that affect my favorite customer (me!). But this one
sucks. I always use 8.3 naming (even under Unix and OS/2 where
I don't have to) so I've never been burned by this.

So....

I've just released a new version of OgEdit which implements
your suggestion. If the file will not open with write access,
the user receives a dialog stating such. When a file is sucessfully
written, a dialog pops up stating the file name, and the number
of bytes saved.

Thanks for alerting me (and others) to this potentially serious
problem.

I remember a post similar to this a few months ago, but I (and
my beta testers) could not repeat the crash. I have no way to
look into this unless it is repeatable with nothing but OG ROM
programs and OgWare (OgEdit, OgComm, and OgFile) loaded.
