I had the same problem. First I checked the modem from my pc to make sure it worked, I plugged it into com2 and changed my aol set up on the pc to use com2...and logged onto aol.
Next (after I got a modem cable, btw) I used zcomlite (available here- zcl110.zip) to dial the modem from my zoomer, while my aol software still wouldn't dial. Finally, I took the modem set up string from zcomlite, and edited that into the aol set up, and now aol works fine. It should not have taken all the commands I copied from zcomlite to do the job, but that's what I had to do...
