The debate seems rather polarized here, speaking as an outsider. On one
side we have those insisting that the Zoomer is a piece of sh-- ... er ...
garbage compared to the glory that is Newton, while on the other side there
are others who claim that Newton "has stumbled badly out of the gate"
(whatever that means) whereas the Zoomer will make the world safe for
democracy. This smacks of zealotry to me, and I don't trust any of you.
Therefore my question is directed to those few moderates out there who
(unlike me) have had actual hands-on contact with a Zoomer. I am a grad
student working on my dissertation; my life consists of sitting under a tree
and reading, while every now and then I copy out 1-3 sentences if they sound
interesting. I would like to use a PDA for this, since my laptop isn't quite
portable enough, but if so it must be able to handle diacriticals (accents,
umlauts, and if possible long-vowel symbols) and have character recognition
which is reasonably speedy. Recognition of Greek characters would be a
dream, but not essential. I will need a reasonably-priced communications
link to my Mac for formatting and archiving. Otherwise, my needs are few.
The consensus in the Newton folder seems to be that it is poorly-suited to a
student's needs. How do you think the Zoomer will perform on the tasks I
have in mind?
Any help you can give me will be deeply appreciated. I don't have the
sort of income where I can afford to make $700 mistakes.
