Ok, perhaps my years of being a computer professional are getting in
the way here, but I've set my modem to talk at 9600 to the Zoomer.
Now, I have these nifty 9600 baud access numbers, so I go into setup,
change the phone number, the baudrate, and have the service type set
correctly. Then I try to call. The modems connect at 9600, the
connect screen goes through the 'connected at 9600' stuff, then the
'checking password' icon highlights, the screen goes away, and the
'Goodbye From America Online!' screen appears saying:
"Speeds above 2400 baud are
currently not supported.
For assistance, call Customer
Relations at 1-800-827-6354"
Of course, for anyone that has ever tried, it generally takes 15-30
minutes of waiting on hold to actually *talk* to customer relations,
then, as you might expect, the people on the other end are generally
clueless, and even more so if you try to tell them you have a
Z7000/Zoomer/ZPDA. I tried looking at the 'Connecting at 9600'
section of the Members on-line help facility when I got on AOL, but
selecting that item brings up a document having to do with
International Business Courses of some type. Nothing in there about
connecting to AOL at 9600 baud.
So is there something *else* I need to do to get 9600 to work?
The more I use the email setup with AOL, which is why I bought the
Zoomer in the first place, the more I wish I had NewtonMail. Then I
could browse my mail offline (I can do this with AOL with my Mac, I
can even have it pop on, download the mail, and pop off), store more
than 8k worth of stuff (which is what AOL's log file maxes out to.
Silently, if you're trying to save one large message).
