CHARTER

RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND

Increasing amounts of material for the GEOS operating system are becoming
available in binary form. This material includes applications, system
drivers, system binary data (fonts, icons), and application binary data
(templates, DTP documents, clip-art). Lengthy postings of UUencoded material
to the general comp.os.geos newsgroup have received negative reactions from
the readers of that group, including GeoWorks employees, and the creation of
a group in a binaries hierarchy has been suggested. As GEOS runs on both
PC-Compatibles and a rapidly growing variety of 80x86-based PDA's and pen
systems, it is unlikely that the group would fit in as a subgroup in another
comp.binaries hierarchy.

CHARTER

1. PURPOSE

The purpose of 'comp.binaries.geos' is to provide a place for the
posting of uuencoded binaries for use with the GEOS operating system
on conventional Personal Computers (PC's), pen-based Personal
Digital Assistants (PDA's), and hybrid Personal Information Assistants
(PIA's).

This will include any freeware or shareware applications, drivers,
libraries, document templates, screen backgrounds, clip-art, document
files, icons, fonts, et cetera. Binaries for other operating systems
which provide interaction or compatibility with GEOS will also be
accepted. The group will be moderated; non-binaries and files without
relation to GEOS will be returned.

The 'comp.binaries.geos' group will be moderated to ensure that all
postings are indeed binaries for use with GEOS.

For more information on GEOS itself, please see the FAQ posted to
'comp.os.geos' periodically.

2. MODERATOR POLICIES

Anyone wishing to make available binary files for other GEOS users is
welcomed and encouraged to submit them to comp.os.geos in uuencoded
form. Only submissions that violate this charter will be returned.
Any returned article will have an explanation attached to it stating
which charter provision was violated.

There shall be at least one moderator for comp.binaries.geos

Repetitive postings (such as multiple responses to one request for
a specific application) may also be rejected. Any rejected article
will be returned to the sender with an explanation.

Administrative communications, comments and inquiries should be
mailed to the moderator(s) rather than being posted to the group.

>From time to time a moderator may choose to give up his or her duties
as a moderator. In such an event the moderator(s) should select a
suitable replacement.

3. SUBMISSIONS

Guidelines for submissions will be regularly posted to news.answer
in a comp.binaries.geos FAQ

Readers of comp.binaries.geos submit articles to the moderator(s) by
email. Articles should be sent to geos@pilot.njin.net. Administrative
comments and requests should be sent to geos-admin@pilot.njin.net
The initial moderator will be birchall@pilot.njin.net (Shag). More
moderators may be added when traffic warrants and technology allows.

A current list of moderators will be included in a comp.binaries.geos
Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) article to be posted to
comp.binaries.geos and selected 'answers' newsgroups.
