Status: OR
This message is being posted here as explained below, as the proposed groups
deal with GEOS, the Zoomer's operating system, and one of the groups deals
directly with pen-based GEOStuff. Sorry for the large message, but that's
the way things came out. :)
Do NOT send votes in response to this message to zoomer-list@grot.starconn.com
or to the poster, birchall@pilot.njin.net.
DO send votes, as per the instructions below, to voting@qualcomm.com.
Thank you.

proposed group contact Dan Birchall <birchall@pilot.njin.net>.
CHARTERS
comp.os.geos.misc (unmoderated) will provide a forum for general discussion
of the GEOS operating system from Geoworks (Berkeley, CA) and products
associated with it. Topics would likely include the OS itself, the Geoworks
Ensemble application suites (v1.0, 1.2, Pro, 2.0, and future), any third-party
software created for GEOS by independent software vendors, system
configuration, et cetera. If this group passes, the group
comp.os.geos will be removed after three months, giving traffic time
to move to the new group.
comp.os.geos.bugs (unmoderated) will provide a forum for the discussion of
problems, conflicts, and "undocumented features" found in GEOS and GEOS-based
products, compatibility difficulties between GEOS and non-GEOS products, and
solutions to these problems. If this group passes, the group
comp.os.msdos.pcgeos will be removed after three months, giving
traffic time to move to the new group.
comp.os.geos.development (unmoderated) will provide a forum for discussion
of the GEOS Software Development Kit, GEOS-based software development and
testing, particularly by third-party independent software vendors, and the
forthcoming GEOS Device Driver Development Kit. Developer's conferences and
third-party development toolkits would also be discussed here.
comp.os.geos.announce (moderated) will provide a forum for the announcement
of GEOS-based products and related services, products and events. The
moderator will be John D. Mitchell, johnm@cory.eecs.berkeley.edu, one of the
developers of GEOS itself. As he does not expect overwhelming traffic at
first, this address will also serve as the initial submission address.
comp.os.geos.pen (unmoderated) will provide a forum for discussion of pen
computers and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) using GEOS, including
hardware, software, drivers, and communications. Topics in this group
would include the systems on which GEOS is available pre-installed (Tandy
Z-PDA, Casio Z-7000, Sharp PT-9000, MicroSlate Datellite 400, and AST
Model 2390), and also the use of GEOS on other pen-based systems (Quaderno,
NCR 3125, etc).
BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE:
Last year, the group comp.os.geos was created to replace the somewhat
mis-named comp.os.msdos.pcgeos group. At that time, it was stated that
a complete hierarchy was planned for eventual implementation. (Note: due
to poor planning, the obsolete comp.os.msdos.pcgeos group was not renamed
or removed at that time.)
Since the creation of comp.os.geos, the GEOS operating system has become
more widely used. Geoworks, maker of GEOS, has formed alliances with
Tandy, Casio, Sharp, Canon, America OnLine, EMBARC, CompuServe, Intuit,
Palm, and other vendors which are resulting in GEOS being available for
both desktop PC's and pen-based PDA's. A low-priced SDK was released in
October, and third-party applications have been appearing since then.
Increasingly, requests have been made for a complete hierarchy, by users
who wish to avoid posting product announcements or highly technical
messages in the current general group.
Statistics generated in early 1994 indicated that each of the topics for
which a new group is proposed accounted for a significant percentage of
posts in the existing comp.os.geos group.
In summary, a new hierarchy with subgroups would better serve the GEOS
rapidly growing communities of GEOS users, intergrators, and developers.
All products mentioned above are most likely (R), TM, or (C) by their
respective creators. Just in case anyone cares.
Each group should get voted on separately - I believe that's the norm.
Better to get some, than none at all, you know.
A separate proposal was filed for comp.binaries.geos.
HOW TO VOTE
Erase everything above the top "-=-=-=-" line and erase everything
below the bottom "-=-=-=-" line. Do not erase anything between these
lines and do not change the group names.
Give your name on the line that asks for it. For each group, place a YES or
NO in the brackets next to it to vote for or against it. If you don't want
to vote on a particular group, just leave the space blank. Don't worry
about spacing of the columns or any quote characters (">") that your reply
inserts.
Then Mail the ballot to: voting@qualcomm.com
Just Replying should work if you are not reading this on a mailing
list. If you are, then double-check the address.
