It's Electronic Mail Broadcast to A Roaming Computer. This is
Motorola's term for alphanumeric paging which makes heavier use of
computers Rather than calling up a human operator who transcribes the
message to be sent to an alphanumeric pager, a computer with special
software can call up the radio transmitter and send the message that
way. At the receiver end a computer can take the message and
incorporate it into a spreadsheet, appointment book, or other
database. The pager technology is pretty much the same, only the use
of computers at both ends is new. Email to pager gateways are
available right now which can selectively forward and edit messages to
be sent to a pager.
The broadcast part of EMBARC refers to the sending of the same message
to multiple recipients, such as stock information and other news. The
incremental cost of multiple recipients is very low.
A list of contacts for various wireless networking systems are
available via anonymous ftp on the Internet as
csd4.csd.uwm.edu:/pub/Portables/wireless-sources. Archived newsgroup
articles are available in the same directory in the file
wireless-news. These files are also available via gopher from the same
host using the path "UWM Information/ Computing Services Division/ Csd4
Public FTP Archive/ Portables/".
