Zoomer speaker volume

I availed myself of the sale at Radio Shack and got a new zoomer.
On my unit, the speaker is quite faint, even with the volume turned
up all the way. I generally miss event alarms even when I have the
zoomer on my person, for example. I know that the loudness is subjective,
but is this normal, or might my unit be defective? (or am I loosing
my hearing too?)
