Whenever you perform a hard reset, it runs you through the initial setup program, which includes the contrast and calibration screens. That's normal. The software is burned into ROM and can't be modified.
If you're using a PCMCIA card, remove it and perform a hard reset again.
If the bottom half of the screen is still not responding, I suspect the hardware is broken.
