Out of the box, a Newton has equal or better handwriting recognition. It's too bad most people don't 'print properly.'

You're right, it does beat having to spend three months teaching a computer to read your writing, but what computer makes you do that? The Newton learns 90% in the first 15 minutes, and the remaining 10% in about a day. This is learning above and beyond its basic recognition, which is already better than the Zoomer. At least the Newton learns.
